Summary
“I was sick and you visited me” (Matthew 25:36). Visiting the sick and the homebound appeals to many people as a fruitful and rewarding ministry. At the same time, so many lack the training and the confidence to follow through with the ministry of presence. Nevertheless, as followers of Jesus, we have an obligation to serve the least of these. Through these sessions, we will cover visitation both abstractly and practically, so we can overcome the awkwardness of not knowing what to say (or of saying the wrong things altogether) as well as the other hurdles which often prevent us from fulfilling this essential call of Christ. Too many lack the presence of someone offering the assurance of eternity with Jesus and the incarnational ministry of God’s love; but, within that need is a great opportunity for the church to bridge the gap.
Growth Goal:
- To a establish a theological foundation for visitation ministry and why we, as the church, must see ministry to the sick and homebound as essential.
- To help prepare oneself at an emotional, mental, and spiritual level before endeavoring on a visit.
- To offer insights during each visitation to ensure their personal and unique nature to the individual being care for.
- To provide practical tools and ambitions for the conclusion of a visitation.
